While European restaurants race to footnote menus, reassuring concerned gourmands that no genetically altered ingredients were used in the preparation of their food, starving populations around the world eagerly await the next harvest of scientifically improved crops. “Mendel in the Kitchen” provides a clear and balanced picture of this tangled, tricky (and very timely) topic. Any farmer you speak to, could tell you that we’ve been playing with the genetic makeup of our food for millennia, carefully coaxing nature to do our bidding. The practice officially dates back to Gregor Mendel – who was not a renowned scientist, but a 19th century Augustinian monk. Mendel spent many hours toiling in his garden, testing and cultivating more than 28,000 pea plants, selectively determining very specific characteristics of the peas that were produced, finally giving birth to the intent of heredity – and the now very common practice of artificially modifying our food. But as science takes the helm, steering common field practices into the laboratory, the world is now keenly aware of how adept we have become at tinkering with nature – which in turn has produced a variety of questions. Are genetically altered foods really safe? Will the foods finally make us sick, perhaps in ways we can’t even imagine? Isn’t it genuinely hazardous to change the nature of nature itself? Nina Fedoroff, a leading geneticist and recognized expert in biotechnology, answers these questions, and more. Addressing the fear and mistrust that is rapidly spreading, Federoff and her co-author, science writer metropolis Brown, weave a narrative rich in history, technology, and science to dispel myths and misunderstandings. In the end, Fedoroff argues, plant biotechnology can help us to become superior stewards of the connector while permitting us to feed ourselves and generations of kids to come. Indeed, this new approach to agriculture holds the promise of being the most environmentally conservative way to increase our food supply.

Official (ISC)2 Study Guide for the Information System Security Engineering Professional (ISSEP) Exam

Official (ISC)2(R) Guide to the CISSP-ISSEP(R) CBK(R) provides an inclusive analysis of all of the topics covered on the newly created ISSEP Exam. The first fully comprehensive guide to the test, it promotes understanding of the four ISSEP domains. It explains ISSE by comparing it to a traditional Systems Engineering model, enabling readers to see the correlation of how security fits into the design and development process. It also details key points of more than 50 U.S. government policies and procedures, which need to be understood in order to acquire ISSEP certification. According to Jim Wiggins of SAIT/IMT who used the book to pass the test, which is typically passed by only 30 percent of applicants, “I’d state you’ve done a pretty good job in writing a book that helps prepare candidates for the test as well as wage them a great resource for understanding much of the process of the Federal Government relating to IA…”

Understanding Molecular Simulation, Second Edition: From Algorithms to Applications (Computational Science Series, Vol 1)

Understanding Molecular Simulation, Second Edition: From Algorithms to Applications (Computational Science Series, Vol 1)

Understanding Molecular Simulation: From Algorithms to Applications explains the physics behind the “recipes” of molecular simulation for materials science. Personal simulators are continuously confronted with questions concerning the choice of a particular technique for a given application. A wide variety of tools exist, so the choice of technique requires a good understanding of the basic principles. More importantly, such understanding might greatly improve the efficiency of a simulation program. The implementation of simulation methods is illustrated in pseudocodes and their practical use in the case studies used in the text.

Since the first edition only five years ago, the simulation world has changed significantly — current techniques have matured and new ones have appeared. This new edition deals with these new developments; in particular, there are sections on:

· Transition path sampling and diffusive barrier crossing to simulaterare events
· Dissipative particle dynamic as a course-grained simulation technique
· Novel schemes to calculate the long-ranged forces
· Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian dynamics in the context constant-temperature and constant-pressure molecular dynamics simulations
· Multiple-time step algorithms as an substitute for constraints
· Defects in solids
· The pruned-enriched Rosenbluth sampling, recoil-growth, and concerted rotations for complex molecules
· Parallel tempering for glassy Hamiltonians

Examples are included that highlight current applications and the codes of case studies are acquirable on the World Wide Web. Several new examples have been added since the first edition to illustrate current applications. Questions are included in this new edition. No prior knowledge of personal simulation is assumed.
